THE THINKING BEHIND THE WORK

Find the Constraint. Set the Direction. Make the Work Count.

Not every SEO problem needs more content, more links, or another round of optimization. Sometimes the real issue is technical. Sometimes the content misses the search intent. Sometimes the work is happening, but the priorities are wrong.

I investigate what's limiting search performance, determine what deserves attention, and lead the work needed to address it. With specialist expertise coordinated around a clear strategy, every activity has a reason for being there.

  1. Diagnose
  2. Prioritize
  3. Coordinate
  4. Execute
  5. Evaluate

01 / HOW I APPROACH SEO

Understand the Problem Before Choosing the Solution.

A website can have dozens of SEO issues without all of them deserving immediate attention. My approach starts with the business objective and the available evidence, then works toward the decisions most likely to matter.

Diagnose: Find the Constraint

Investigate search performance, technical conditions, content, website structure, and relevant competitors to understand what's happening and which explanations the evidence supports.

Prioritize: Decide What Matters

Evaluate business relevance, potential value, risk, implementation effort, dependencies, and the strength of the evidence. Not every finding needs immediate action.

Coordinate: Assign the Right Expertise

Establish the work required, who owns each responsibility, and how different activities fit together. The team and level of involvement depend on the project.

Execute: Address the Priorities

Translate decisions into defined work, from technical remediation and on-page improvements to content development, local SEO, and other agreed activities.

Evaluate: Decide What Comes Next

Review the available results against the original objective, identify what changed, and determine whether to continue, adjust, or investigate further.

02 / HOW I INVESTIGATE SEARCH VISIBILITY

Four Considerations. A More Complete View of Search.

To understand why a website may struggle to gain visibility, I examine four connected considerations. They help frame the investigation across traditional organic search and, where relevant, AI-powered search experiences.

Access

Can the right pages be discovered and accessed?

I investigate crawling, indexation, site architecture, internal linking, and technical barriers that may prevent important content from being accessed as intended.

Areas of investigation

  • crawlability
  • indexation
  • website architecture
  • internal linking
  • technical accessibility

Understand

Is the information clear, relevant, and useful?

I assess search intent, content quality, page purpose, and information structure to understand whether the website addresses what its intended audience needs.

Areas of investigation

  • search intent
  • content relevance
  • information structure
  • page relationships
  • topical coverage

Trust

Is there a credible basis for relying on the information?

I consider the usefulness and reliability of the content, the demonstration of relevant expertise, supporting evidence, and the clarity of the business or source behind it.

Areas of investigation

  • content quality
  • expertise
  • business identity
  • supporting evidence
  • credibility signals

Retrieve

Can relevant information be surfaced in the experiences that matter?

Where AI Search is relevant, I examine how clearly information is represented and what observable evidence is available about visibility, referral activity, and citations.

Areas of investigation

  • content representation
  • contextual clarity
  • relevant structured data
  • available AI Search visibility and referral evidence

03 / STRATEGY & EXECUTION

One Strategic Lead. Specialist Expertise. A Shared Direction.

Effective SEO requires more than individual specialists doing their jobs well. Their work needs to support the same objectives, follow the right priorities, and fit together across the website.

I lead the strategy and coordinate the specialist expertise needed to execute it.

My Role

SEO Strategy & Leadership

I establish the objectives, investigate the website, identify constraints, set priorities, coordinate responsibilities, and evaluate progress. I keep the work aligned with the business goals and ensure that individual activities contribute to the wider strategy.

Technical SEO

Investigating technical barriers, crawlability, indexation, technical issues, and website performance.

On-Page SEO & Content

Improving page relevance, content structure, search intent alignment, and on-page implementation.

Off-Page SEO

Supporting appropriate authority-building activities and relevant off-page opportunities.

Local SEO & Google Business Profile

Addressing location-focused visibility, business profile optimization, and relevant local search requirements.

Data & Analysis

Supporting performance analysis and using available evidence to inform strategic decisions.

Website Strategy

Supporting website architecture, connected priorities, and wider website requirements.

How We Work Together

I define the direction.

Business objectives and diagnostic findings determine the priorities.

Specialists contribute their expertise.

The right people are assigned to the work that matches their responsibilities.

Responsibilities remain clear.

I clarify what I lead, what contributors execute, and what requires input from the client or another partner.

The work stays connected.

Activities are coordinated around shared priorities rather than treated as unrelated tasks.

Results inform the next decision.

The team reviews available evidence and adapts the work where necessary.

The objective is not to involve the whole team in every project. It is to bring the right expertise to the right problem while keeping strategy and accountability clear.

Specialist involvement varies according to the engagement's requirements and agreed scope.

04 / WHERE EFFORT GOES

The Most Important Issue Isn't Always the Most Obvious One.

A technical audit may uncover many errors. A content review may reveal dozens of gaps. A competitor analysis may produce a long list of opportunities.

The real work is deciding which findings deserve attention now.

Remove Meaningful Blockers

Address issues that prevent important pages from being discovered, accessed, or used as intended.

Address the Actual Search Need

Prioritize improvements that resolve a demonstrated relevance or content problem instead of adding material without a clear purpose.

Respect Dependencies

Identify work that must happen first so later implementation can be effective.

Match Effort to Value

Consider potential impact, urgency, risk, implementation cost, available resources, and the strength of the evidence.

05 / HOW PROGRESS IS EVALUATED

Measure What Matters. Understand What Changed.

The appropriate measurement depends on the objective. Search visibility, website health, business outcomes, and AI Search evidence each provide different information.

Organic Search Performance

What is changing in search?

Google Search Console data such as impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and average position, interpreted by page, query, market, and reporting period where relevant.

Technical Health

Can the website be discovered and accessed as intended?

Relevant crawling and indexation checks, technical issues, and website performance indicators.

Business Outcomes

Is the work supporting the intended business objective?

Qualified visits, enquiries, leads, or sales when reliable tracking and clear conversion definitions are available.

AI Search Evidence

What can we observe beyond traditional search results?

Identifiable referral traffic and other available visibility signals, reported separately from traditional organic search metrics.

A change in performance is a starting point for analysis, not automatic proof of causation. I consider the timing, work implemented, other plausible influences, and the limitations of the available data before drawing conclusions.

Measurement should help determine the next action—not simply produce a report.

06 / APPLICATION IN PRACTICE

Different Websites. Different Constraints. The Same Discipline.

My experience spans multi-site SEO, SaaS, eCommerce, local businesses, and AI Search. Each context changes the questions that need to be asked and the work that deserves attention.

01

Multi-Site SEO

As SEO Lead across six websites, I work across connected properties, technical foundations, content, performance analysis, and coordination.

Focus

Coordinating priorities across multiple websites while maintaining a coherent strategic direction.

02

SaaS

Working on an AI text-tools product gives me direct context for product-related search intent, website architecture, and organic discoverability.

Focus

Aligning product and website discovery.

03

eCommerce — Retail & Long-Term SEO

My experience includes building and ranking my own store, working on a fashion and apparel project, and providing long-term SEO support for Rachel's Tea.

Focus

Commercial intent, product discovery, content relevance, and conversion considerations.

04

Local SEO — Service Businesses

My local SEO experience began with a paid engagement for a US dental clinic and continued across local business projects.

Focus

Local intent, business information, and relevant service visibility.

05

AI Search — Discovery & Citation

I extend the investigation to AI-powered search where relevant, distinguishing observable AI referrals and visibility evidence from traditional organic search performance.

Focus

Information clarity, discoverability, and measurable evidence.

These examples represent different professional and project contexts, not five separate client case studies.

07 / ACCOUNTABILITY

Clear Reasoning. Honest Reporting. No Guaranteed Outcomes.

Search performance is affected by competition, demand, search-system changes, website history, and implementation conditions. No consultant can control all of these factors.

What I can control is the quality of the investigation, the reasoning behind the priorities, the work delivered within the agreed scope, and the honesty with which the evidence is interpreted.

What You Can Expect

A clear rationale

Understand why work is recommended and how it relates to your objectives.

Defined responsibilities

Know who leads the strategy, who handles implementation, and where client or third-party involvement is required.

Evidence-led evaluation

Assess progress using relevant measurements aligned with the agreed objectives.

Honest communication

Understand what the results show, what remains uncertain, and where the evidence has limitations.

Adaptable priorities

Adjust the plan as the project develops and new information emerges.

I don't guarantee specific rankings, traffic increases, leads, or AI citations. I focus on building a sound strategy, executing the appropriate work, and making informed decisions based on the available evidence.
